“Google Cloud、ペタバイトクラスのスケーラブルなNFSサーバを実現するElastifileの買収を発表”という記事を↓で読んだのですが、そこに貼られてたリンクのGoogle to acquire Elastifileというブログを見てみたらちょっと興味深かったので。

Google to acquire Elastifileという記事で、Google Cloud CEOのThomas Kurianっていうクレジットになってるから肝入なディールなのかな？と思ってしまったりして。ちなみにこのThomasさんは、Diane Greeneさんの後釜として、去年Googleにjoinした人で、長いことOracleにいた有名人で、さっきLinkedInみたら、元々はマッキンゼーのコンサルタントだったみたいですね。Google Cloud Next 2019でのThomasさんのキーノートについて、AWSのそれよりもビジネス感ある的な話もなんとなく頷けるという感じなのかもしれません。

そういえば、GCP NEXTのキーノートをチラ見したときに、岩尾はるかさんの話とかSunder Pichaiがイイ感じに盛り上げた後に、Google CloudのCEOとしてThomasさんが出てきて、デジタルトランスフォーメーションの話してたなぁとか。

でもって、ブログに話を戻して、このアクイジション自体は今年の年末くらいにクロージングされて、その後、ElastifileはGoogle Cloudにジョインする、とのこと。
The acquisition of Elastifile is expected to be completed later this year and is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of regulatory approvals.
このブログでもやっぱりデジタルトランスフォーメーションが〜っていう文脈になっていて、SAPを動かすのに、みたいな話はGoogleのCloudでもあるっていうか、そういう案件がガッツリあるからこういうサービスの買収に踏み切った、みたいなところもあるのかな？と思ったり。元クラウド屋の視点からすると、マウントしない方向で、分散オブジェクトストレージを活用しつつ、KVSを使った状態管理とか出来るとカッコイイんじゃないかな？と思ったりするけど(Amazon CloudSearchのアーキテクチャとかはまさにそう)、「今動いてるものがｘｘなんで！」とかって言われちゃうとそこはなんとかせなアカンって話になったりするのかな？と。
そして、”Kubernetes need file storage for their stateful workloads”コレを同じ文脈でココに持ってくるって、なんとなく違和感があったりするけど(言いたいことは分かりますが)、とにかく”critical applications migrate to the cloud”っていう重要なワークロードをクラウドに！っていうメッセージングなのだと理解しました。
File storage is fundamental to enterprise infrastructure and a priority for customers looking to accelerate their digital transformation. For example, companies who run SAP need access to highly available and consistent file storage. Developers building applications that use Kubernetes need file storage for their stateful workloads. As these critical applications migrate to the cloud, IT teams need simple, natively compatible storage options along with the features and performance to support them.
というか、2つ前の職場が思いっきりNFSに依存するアーキテクチャになっていて、時にガッツリ辛い思いをしてたので(とは言えHDFSに夢見てたら、それはそれでもっと辛かったっていう話で、S3スゲェわ…なんて思ったものですが。。)、なんとなくNFSって言われただけで自分の中でネガティブ感が出てしまうのかもしれませんが↓この辺読んでると、世の中にはまだまだそういうワークロードがあって、リフト＆シフトで持ってくる的な感じなんだろうな、と。
The combination of Elastifile and Google Cloud will support bringing traditional workloads into GCP faster and simplify the management and scaling of data and compute intensive workloads.
↓この辺は、実際にGCPにNASのソリューションあったら使うよ！っていうフィードバックをもらってるところだったりするのでしょうか。GCPのマーケットプレイズ上にある情報でペタバイトとかになると鼻毛出ちゃいそうだけど、アクイジション後にマネージドサービス化して、”激安での提供!!”みたいな話になったらゲームチェンジャー感出てきたりするのかな。
